The Social Identity Theory in Youth Sports

FFCP’s research incorporates insights from Coakley (2016) and social identity theory to examine how athletes form their sense of self. Social identity in sports operates in three stages:

  1. Categorization: Athletes are grouped by traits like skill level, potential, or role on a team.

  2. Identification: Athletes internalize these groupings, often viewing themselves primarily as “athletes.”

  3. Comparison: Athletes compare themselves to peers and opponents, reinforcing a competitive mindset driven by results over personal growth.

This rigid identity formation leads to long-term issues when athletes face setbacks, injuries, or the transition out of sports.
